BRIDGETON -- A state prison escapee was back in custody Wednesday, four days after he and another inmate "walked away" together from South Woods State Prison, authorities said. The second escapee remained at large Wednesday night. Both men were housed in South Woods' minimum-security unit, which is on the grounds of the South Burlington Road prison, but outside its secure perimeter. The escapes occurred after the inmates each had spent about five years in prison for drug offenses and other crimes -- but just months before they possibly could have been released on parole. The escapes, which occurred Saturday, are odd because both inmates were eligible for placement in even less restrictive "halfway houses," state Department of Corrections spokeswoman Deirdre Fedkenheuer said.
