A federal grand jury has indicted two Mecklenburg County, N.C. sheriff's deputies after an inmate said they violated his civil rights by beating him at the jail. Sheriff Jim Pendergraph stood behind Capt. Rodney Collins and former Sgt. Paul Gee on Wednesday, however. "There is no evidence that we know of, standing here today, that there's any way in the world they can convict either one of these," Pendergraph said. The case stems from May 10, 2000, when Paul Midgett was struck several times in the face. The former inmate called it a beating; the sheriff called it necessary force after he said Midgett attacked a female deputy. An internal investigation found no wrongdoing. Pendergraph said he has already talked to county commissioners about helping to pay the legal bills for the two men's defense. That decision has not been made. |
