Penitentiary Services national director, Consuelo Cerrada has one of the most difficult jobs in Venezuela and usually appears in public view after riots in prisons. As Venezuela grapples with penitentiary reforms and humanization programs, there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel, given the number of riots and protests inside jails. In the latest incident the toll was 16 inmates dead and 35 wounded in a riot that took place in the Tocoron Prison in Aragua two days ago. Cerrada has confirmed that the riot was caused by groups fighting for control inside the jail. It is the usual cause for the deaths and ensuing destruction as authorities have been unable to stop the entry of drugs and weapons into prisons. Read More. |
