EAGAR - April 19 of this year, parts of Eagar were closed down for over 10 hours during a standoff with resident Yancy Reed. Reed was arrested for disorderly conduct and assault involving Ashley Stevens 20, the daughter of Reed's girlfriend, Lisa Marie Stevens. His hands were cuffed behind his back and Reed was placed in the rear of a patrol car. In the confusion, officers failed to realize a rifle was lying on the backseat.

Reed managed to grab the rifle and held police at bay while pointing the weapon at himself. A tactical team was brought in from Show Low, but the decision was made to wait him out. Reed finally surrendered by dropping the weapon outside the police car.

Although arrested for disorderly conduct and assault, Reed was not charged for the event in order to honor promises made by law enforcement to end the standoff peacefully. County Attorney Michael Whiting said, "I believe that it is important to honor promises made by law enforcement officers to promote trust ... and to support officers who may be forced to make hard promises to protect public safety in the future."
