| Iowa Inmates Receive Food Stamps |

The Iowa Department of Human Services is continuing to provide food-stamp benefits to jail inmates who aren't entitled to the assistance. Federal regulations prohibit people who are jailed for 30 days or more from collecting food-stamp benefits while incarcerated. But a state investigation last summer at the Polk County Jail found that 33 percent of the inmates who had been there at least 30 days were illegally collecting benefits. The findings are similar to those of an investigation at the jail 19 months ago. Although federal rules include a broad prohibition on the payment of benefits to inmates, Iowa's rules are more narrowly drawn. They're designed to prohibit people from applying for, or attempting to renew, food-stamp benefits while in jail. Because that renewal process occurs only once every six months, an Iowa inmate can collect up to six months of benefits in jail without being caught. Read More. |
