TRENTON — New Jersey authorities are testing new technology as they step up efforts to stem the tide of illegal phones in state prisons. Department of Corrections Commissioner Gary Lanigan says an internal committee is examining whether to invest in detection equipment, along with recommending ways to improve security. Law enforcement officials say phones in prisons can be as dangerous as weapons. Inmates use the devices to secretly communicate with each other, intimidate witnesses and direct drug deals and other illegal activity. Read More. |
