YACOLT, Wash. – “We will close Larch Corrections Center on February 1, 2011.” So begins an e-mail sent to KATU from the Washington State Department of Corrections. And with that, the minimum-security prison – which has long provided work crews for forest firefighting, graffiti removal, river restoration and groundskeeping at Southwest Washington tourism draws – will shutter a mere four months from now. The move is part of sweeping changes to the state's correctional system after Washington's governor called for across-the-board spending reductions of 6.3 percent at all general-fund state agencies.
