| Law Leaning On Parole Raises Debate |

A new law that frees some prison inmates prior to the completion of their maximum sentence is drawing fire from opponents and defense from supporters. Senate Bill 500, which received bipartisan support in the N.H. Legislature, recently went into effect. The law calls for certain violent and non-violent offenders who come before the Adult Parole Board to be released before serving their maximum sentence. The bill is expected to save millions of dollars for the Department of Corrections while reducing the state’s prison population by up to 600 people. Supporters say it will also improve safety and reduce recidivism, as the parolees will be strictly monitored after their release.
