A Petersburg man charged in the fatally beating of a Virginia State University student this week in his off-campus apartment pleaded guilty seven years ago to assaulting a Petersburg convenience store clerk and robbing the business of $300, a prosecutor said today. Deondray Daniel “Flip” Maddox, then 17, entered the store at 620 N. Adams St. with a teen-age accomplice and asked the female clerk to see some merchandise. When the clerk went to retrieve it, Maddox struck her in the face as the second teen emptied the register of $300, said Petersburg Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Cheryl Wilson. In December 2003, Maddox was tried as an adult, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 13 years and four months suspended, Wilson said. He was released from prison on April 26 after serving six years and eight months, according to the Virginia Department of Corrections. Read More. |
