California prison officials have secured a new supply of a drug used to execute prisoners by lethal injection. The acquisition removes one obstacle to the resumption of executions in California. Sodium thiopental is one of three drugs California uses in lethal injections. It’s the barbiturate that knocks out the Death Row inmate; two other drugs paralyze him and stop his heart. Prison officials were poised to use it last month in the execution of convicted Riverside killer Albert Brown – the first one in California in almost five years. They faced a time crunch: the drug was due to expire a day after Brown’s execution date – and the U.S. drug maker said it wouldn’t have a new supply for months. Read More. |
