Oregon's prison population will fluctuate slightly during the next two years, generally staying between 14,000 and 14,200 inmates, the state Office of Economic Analysis reported Monday.

The 14-prison corrections system currently holds 14,066 inmates.

The prison population is expected to start increasing at a faster rate around mid-2012, adding about 1,000 inmates during a two-year period. The inmate population will reach 15,000 by mid-2014, 15,500 by mid-2015 and level off at nearly 16,000 at the end of the decade, according to the state's latest forecast.

The state Office of Economic Analysis issues twice yearly prison population projection reports on April 1 and Oct. 1. It provides 10-year projections of the number of people who will be subject to supervision by the Oregon Department of Corrections.

The community corrections population, which now totals about 32,000, is projected to increase gradually to 35,200 by the end of the decade. People sentenced to probation make up about 56 percent of that number and offenders on post-prison supervision account for 42 percent. The remaining 2 percent consists of other offenders subject to local control.
