An 18-year-old prison escapee was captured last Wednesday after allegedly assaulting a probation officer, stealing a van to escape, using a cell phone to call his girlfriend and hiding out in the trunk of her car as she drove through town.
Jordan M. Spoonhour, Chambersburg, was on work release near Camp Joy-El, Greencastle, when he assaulted a county probation employee, stole the probation van, drove to a wooded area, called and was picked up by Shalena L. Wedlock, 19, at 9:45 a.m., according to Pennsylvania State Police, Chambersburg.
Police agencies spent nearly two hours last Wednesday looking for Spoonhour when he was apprehended by Chambersburg Police and the Franklin County Sheriff's Department just after 11:15 a.m., hiding in the trunk of Wedlock's car, state police said.
She was pulled over by Chambersburg Police along King Street adjacent to Fort Chambers. Authorities said they had prior knowledge of Wedlock's relationship with Spoonhour that led to watching her car.
"Once we received information on the vehicle, our units were on the lookout within the borough," Chambersburg Police Sgt. John Phillippy said. "Once the vehicle was located, we made a traffic stop and the individual was found in the trunk."
The driver got out of the van and Spoonhour drove off, leaving the other two inmates with the driver.
Spoonhour drove to Camp Joy-El, where he parked the van and ran into the woods to wait for Wedlock, according to state police.
Camp Joy-El, a ministry campground located just off Pa. 995 in St. Thomas Township, was in the midst of its elementary camp week with children playing together in a large group in a field on campus at the time Spoonhour stole the van.
Ziebarth said a few staff members witnessed Spoonhour running out of the van and fleeing the area.
Ziebarth said staff and campers were in the chapel for roughly 1 1/2 hours.
Spoonhour was arraigned before District Justice David Hawbaker on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, escape, attempted kidnapping and theft.
Spoonhour was serving a one- to two-year sentence he received on April 21 on charges of assault and making terroristic threats in incidents involving Wedlock, with whom he has a child, and another local woman, according to court records.
The assaulted county probation employee was treated at Chambersburg Hospital for facial injuries and a cut on his right arm, state police said.
