The Monterey County District Attorney's Office has set a precedent across the state after five men admitted last month to committing a crime to benefit the Northern Riders. The Northern Riders, a rapidly growing Norteño dropout group, has not seen prosecution as a criminal street gang in the state, because authorities have never been able to get a witness to testify against them. The men, Jesus Cota, Billy Auyon, Ramiro Rodriguez, Ivan Morales and Eric Amaro, were accused of carrying out a December 2009 assault at the Monterey County Jail to further their gang's influence. As a result, the county's District Attorney's Office charged all five with assault likely to produce great bodily injury and gang enhancements, accusing them of committing the offense to benefit the Northern Riders criminal street gang.
