| AZ Prison Says Flawed Alarm System Fixed |

KINGMAN - Management and Training Corporation, the operator of the privately run state prison in Kingman, says the malfunctioning alarm system that contributed to the escape of three inmates July 30 has been fixed. Arizona Department of Corrections Director Charles Black told the Board of Supervisors during a presentation last month that the alarm system was not properly installed by the manufacturer, Senstar of Canada, when the prison opened in 2004. He said the connections for wires were not properly weatherized, leading to alarms that sounded for no reason so frequently, prison staff disregarded them. Interviews conducted by the DOC in the weeks following the escape found that prison employees were aware for months of the broken alarm but no work orders were ever issued for repair. The on-site monitor for the DOC, David Lee, was fired after the escape. Complex Administrator Darla Elliott and Hualapai Unit Warden Lori Leader were also relieved of their duties. New Complex Administrator Jerry Sternes and new Hualapai Warden Neil Turner are now at the prison, replacing MTC Vice-president Al Murphy, who had been acting as complex administrator in the interim.
