| VA State Prisons Uninteresting To Immigration Services |

The federal immigration-enforcement service won’t take over a Virginia prison because it has guard towers, the director of the Virginia Department of Corrections said today. “Too harsh, I guess,” Gene M. Johnson told the House Appropriations Committee, when asked why not. Another obstacle, he said, is that the state prisons don’t have air conditioning. “‘Alice in Wonderland’ has come true in Virginia,” said Del. L. Scott Lingamfelter, R-Prince William. He said he was talking about locking up illegal immigrants who are criminals. Johnson, who said the state has met with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials to discuss turning over certain facilities to the federal government, said federal officials balked at taking over another facility because it wasn’t sufficiently secure.
