IRVIEW HEIGHTS • A months-long operation to check on sex offenders in Southern Illinois has resulted in 20 arrests, federal and state officials said Monday. While 93 percent of the 2,233 sex offenders in 38 counties were in compliance with their registration and parole requirements, officials cited several chilling examples of those who were not. One is suspected of multiple rapes in St. Clair and Bond counties. Another was living with his girlfriend and her three children. Another, in Clay County, said he liked to park in places frequented by children, "watch little girls and masturbate." "That's the kind of person we need to get off the street," Don Slazinik, the U.S. marshal for Southern Illinois, said at an afternoon news conference at the U.S. attorney's office here to announce the results.
