Officials say the Monterey County Sheriff's Office needs to clarify the way it classifies jail inmates who are gang members. The county Equal Opportunity Office has reviewed the Sheriff's Office's handling of a March melee at the county jail, in which 67 inmates barricaded themselves in the "E" and "F" pods, tore up cells and armed themselves with homemade knives. The uprising caused about $15,000 in damage. Jail chief Steve Deering identifies the inmates as all NorteIno gang members. Jail officials try to keep members of warring gangs apart, and classify them when they are booked. But the county's equal opportunity officer, Rudy Asunsolo, sent a letter to Sheriff Mike Kanalakis saying the inmates blamed the sheriff's classification system for the riot. The letter does not say how the classification system might be at fault. |
