Ricky Wassenaar, the inmate who masterminded the takeover of an officer tower at a state prison and held two corrections officers hostage, will act as his own attorney. Dressed in black-and-white striped prison garb and surrounded by five paramilitary-looking officers, Wassenaar told a Maricopa County (Ariz.) Superior Court judge last Wednesday that he wanted to fire the two public defenders assigned to his case. "I do not recognize them as my counsel," he said. He faces multiple felony charges including kidnapping and sexual assault. Wassenaar told the court, and wrote on his personal Web site, that he believes his attorneys are serving the interests of Mel McDonald, a special county attorney investigating the handling of the hostage standoff. Judge Warren J. Granville granted Wassenaar's motion and ordered an investigator be appointed to assist him. |
