At a community meeting on mental health services in Dawson County Tuesday night, Eastern Montana Mental Health executive director Frank Lane made a surprise announcement: Thursday the agency will close on the purchase of land on North Merrill Avenue between the Days Inn and a storage facility with plans to build a new 6,000 square foot mental health outpatient facility. Lane described the over forty year journey of serving seventeen counties in Eastern Montana, especially in Dawson, McCone, and Wibaux counties, as sometimes tenuous without a permanent home for the agency. In 1968 the non-profit program was birthed in the basement of the community hospital in Glendive. Nearly a decade later the organization rented space in a building plagued with mold, a leaky roof and heat problems where they stayed until 2008 when the State of Montana Department of Corrections offered the program the former Eastmont administrative building. That offer was rescinded when neighbors objected to the move. Meanwhile, their offices had been rented out and the only building available was in the upstairs of a downtown business incubator. The owners of that building, according to Lane, have generously attempted to address elevator access, heat, and air conditioning needs with $100,000 dollars of improvements. However, even with the improvements, the building still does not meet state standards and the program is at risk of losing its state mental health license if a new building is not located. Loss of the license could cause significant problems in Dawson, McCone, and Wibaux Counties. Eastern Montana Mental Health serves seventeen counties. Last year alone the organization served nearly 1,000 individuals, spent nearly 17,000 hours with them, and had a total of over 15,000 contacts in just those three counties. Read More. |
