A Cameron County (Texas) jail inmate was stabbed in the neck and 11 other inmates were injured in what officials called a gang-related riot. No jail officials were hurt in the Friday riot at the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center. The riot started Friday afternoon as fights broke out in multiple cells. "The fight seemed planned," jail administrator Agustin Rivera said to The Brownsville Herald. "As soon as one cell block ... started fighting, the others soon followed suit, with violence spreading like wild fire." At least 135 inmates took part in the fights in six separate cells, Rivera said. It took Cameron County sheriff's deputies about 10 minutes to bring the fight under control. Metal shanks and other makeshift weapons were used during the brawl, Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Elizabeth Anguiano said. The riot took place at a time when inmates were cleaning, so mops and brooms also were used as weapons. A sharpened, blood-covered toothbrush was seen being taken from the area. The inmate who was stabbed was taken to Valley Regional Medical Center in Brownsville, where his condition was not immediately known. Jail officials would not disclose the identities of the inmates. |
