An inmate at a southwestern Indiana prison attacked three prison workers with a broom handle, breaking one officer's jaw, officials said. Timothy Moore, 26, was working in the food service area in the high-to-medium security side of the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility early Friday when he allegedly struck correctional officer Jackie Chambers in the face and body with a broom handle. Moore also struck staff members John Mayes and Donna Jones with the broom when they came to Chambers' aid, according to a statement released by prison officials. Chambers, 47, suffered a broken jaw and was scheduled to have surgery at a Bloomington hospital, said prison spokesman Rich Larsen. Mayes, 34, and Jones, 56, were treated and released Friday for minor injuries. Larsen said it is unclear at this time what Moore's motive was for the assaults at the prison 30 miles south of Terre Haute. Moore, who is serving a 22-year sentence for attempted murder in Lake County and has been at the prison since 1998, was scheduled for release in April 2009. During his six years at the Carlisle prison, Moore has had at least 10 infractions lodged against him, ranging from battery to disobeying orders, Larsen said. He said all three staff members injured in the attack have clean records. The extent of Moore's punishment will depend on the outcome of an investigation. Larsen said Moore could face up to a year in segregation for each offense and if charged criminally, he could face more incarceration time. |
