CT Unions Oppose Private Prisons

New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - The unions representing some 5,000 corrections workers label an idea by the Foley-Boughton ticket as “tomfoolery,” but Tom Foley told News 8 his concept for the prisons is only about saving taxpayer dollars.

Prison guards who work in the state's Department of Corrections say sending some inmates out of Connecticut to do their time in other states is a road we've unsuccessfully traveled down before.

“Outsourcing is not the way to go. Privatization is not the way to go,” said Dwayne Bickford with AFSCME Local 387.

The unions contend that the Tom Foley/Mark Boughton Republican team for Governor is considering a plan to privatize the state's prisons and outsource some of the duties of DOC personnel.
