A former area woman was sentenced to 15 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter.

Julie M. McVey, 41, entered an Alford plea of guilty and was sentenced Oct. 7 in Wright County, Mo., Circuit Court, according to an online court docket. In an Alford plea, the defendant does not admit guilt but allows there is enough evidence for a conviction.

McVey, formerly of Baxter and Marion counties, had been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Marlene Krabbenhoft, 45, whose body was found November 2004 in the Mark Twain Forest in Douglas County, Mo.

Authorities said Krabbenhoft had been beaten and strangled to death a month earlier. Co-defendants in the case already are serving prison sentences.
