IONE, CA - It's a decision that surprised, then outraged the residents in the city of Ione: the closure of the Preston Youth Facility, a juvenile detention center operated by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. In June of 2011, most operations at the youth facility will stop, juveniles will be shipped out and approximately 445 workers will be laid off. The Department calls it a business and financial decision. "We are going forward with formal closure," said Undersecretary Scott Kernan. "Not to say we won't listen to the public or participate in legislative process, but the decision has been made by the department."
