| Study Shows Younger, More Violent Gang Members |

Gang members are getting younger and more violent in Montgomery County, but grant money that is expected to arrive in the next few weeks will help pay for counseling and other programs to reach at-risk youth as well as for tougher prosecution to crack down on criminals, police said. The Montgomery County Council's Public Safety Committee met Thursday afternoon with police, recreation, school and health and human services officials to talk about the impact of a $2.7 million federal grant that will pay for anti-gang initiatives in both Montgomery and Prince George's counties. Of the $1.3 million to be received by Montgomery County, $400,000 is planned for the county's department of health and human services for outreach and counseling services for at-risk youth. The remaining $900,000 will fund four police gang specialists, a gang specialist position in the county department of corrections in addition to more funds for prosecution efforts by the Gang Prosecution Unit in the county state's attorney's office.
