| MO Jail Faces Wrongful Death Lawsuit |

The 31-year-old collapsed from heart failure at the St. Louis Justice Center on May 25, 2009, five days after he was arrested for a probation violation. His family said he had been taken into custody because he missed a meeting with his probation officer. After he collapsed, he was transported to St. Louis University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Lucas had chronic heart disease and used a pacemaker. In a wrongful death lawsuit filed this month against the city and the jail's health care provider on behalf of Lucas' family, the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri contends jail officials failed to provide Lucas with adequate medical care or the necessary medications to treat his condition. "I'm just upset and angry because the system failed him," said one of Lucas' sisters, Landa Poke. The private contractor that provides medical care at the jail says the lawsuit's version of how Lucas died has inaccuracies and insists its staff is "experienced and well-trained." Read More. |
