A 71-year-old DeKalb County (Ga.) Jail inmate awaiting transfer to a mental hospital since March was beaten to death Wednesday, allegedly by a prisoner booked into the jail two days earlier. Hoyt Davie Jenkins died at the hand of a 24-year-old inmate he was sharing a cell with, said DeKalb police Sgt. T.S. Hunt. The death was reported to police about 7 a.m., Hunt said. The inmate, Jason Corey Smith of Morrow, was booked into the jail Monday on a misdemeanor charge of possessing less than an ounce of marijuana, jail records show. Now Smith faces a felony charge of murder. DeKalb police said they did not have a motive for the fatal beating. Mikki Jones, spokeswoman for the jail, would only say police were investigating the matter. Jenkins, of Pine Lake, was jailed in September, charged with driving a vehicle without proper tags, aggravated assault and trying to flee police. Jenkins' jail records show the judge ordered a mental competency test for him in December. And in an order filed March 4, Judge Robert J. Castellani ruled that Jenkins should be transferred from the Sheriff's Department to the state Human Resources Department at Georgia Regional Hospital, a state-run mental hospital on Panthersville Road. |
