DEDHAM, MA, Oct. 26, 2010 – Norfolk County Sheriff Michael G. Bellotti has announced that his popular summer Youth Leadership Academy will resume in 2011 after a two-year hiatus.

“The Youth Leadership Academy gives kids a chance to work with other kids and accomplish things they never imagined they could do. It’s all about learning to work together as a team and to meet challenges head-on. Kids discover the amazing things they are capable of,” Sheriff Bellotti said about the academy, which features an aerial ropes course to uniquely test the youngsters.

Nearly 4,000 Norfolk Country youths have already graduated from the one-of-a-kind week-long academy since Sheriff Bellotti first introduced it at his Braintree Public Safety Complex in 2002.

Sheriff Bellotti was forced to cancel the Youth Leadership Academy in 2009 and 2010 because of fiscal constraints.

"We hated to cancel the academy because it is so popular with Norfolk County kids and their parents. We’re thrilled to be able to bring it back,” he said.

Sheriff Bellotti developed a plan to seek corporate sponsors through a charitable foundation to help underwrite the costs of the academy.

In past years, the academy was conducted in eight one-week sessions that began in July and ended in August. Details for the 2011 academy are not yet finalized, but Sheriff Bellotti expects to begin accepting applications early next year.
