Lackawanna County District Attorney Andy Jarbola said Thursday he will not ask the state attorney general's office to investigate the near-fatal beating of an inmate at the county prison. Even though a long-awaited report by the state Department of Corrections released Wednesday made no mention of the beating - the reason state corrections' officials were asked to investigate - Mr. Jarbola said he essentially considers the case closed. Scranton police have already charged an inmate, Michael Simonson, with the brutal, head-stomping beating of fellow inmate Nicholas Pinto. "So what else is there to investigate?" Mr. Jarbola asked. He said it was his understanding that fellow members of the prison board were trying to arrange a meeting with state corrections officials, presumably to ask questions about their findings in the prison beating. Mr. Jarbola said he had spent Thursday morning reading through the report and found several findings troubling, especially that prison staff had no complete inventories of weapons, tools or keys.
