Man Serving Life Gets 2 More Life Sentences

A Lebanon, Ohio, man convicted of first-degree murder, robbery and armed criminal action will serve two life sentences as well as an additional 30 years in prison.

Sentenced by presiding Platte County Circuit Judge Lee Hull, John M. Hughes, 35, was given a life sentence without parole, one with parole and an additional 30 years in prison for the 2008 shooting death of Valentin G. Kirilchuk, a truck driver from Springfield, Mo.

Platte County Prosecutor Eric Zahnd said he was sickened by the case’s details but pleased with the sentencing.

“I think this is definitely an evil and vile man, and the sentence that the court handed down is very appropriate,” he said.

The sentence comes one year after charges were filed against Mr. Hughes and Dana K. Tutor, 34, of Pearl, Miss., in a case that had appeared to have gone cold.
