As Donna Gross was put to rest last week, the man accused in her slaying remains in the Napa County Jail, waiting for his next court appearance. Jess Willard Massey was arrested at the psychiatric hospital Oct. 23 in connection with the death of the 54-year-old psychiatric technician from Concord. Massey, who is now 37, has spent most of his life either in state prison or in state mental health institutions, according to news reports and authorities. “He has a very long violent history,” said Bryan Myers, a Sacramento County deputy district attorney who prosecuted Massey in Sacramento County Superior Court in 1996. Massey, who had spent a few years at Napa State as a teen, was declared legally insane in 1996 in Sacramento Superior Court, where he was tried in the carjacking and assault of a woman in a parking garage near the state Capitol in Sacramento, according to news reports and Bryan Myers, a Sacramento County deputy district attorney who prosecuted Massey.
