Inmate Death Under Investigation

The Connecticut Department of Correction is investigating the apparent suicide of an inmate at the Bridgeport Correctional Center.

At approximately 2:45 a.m. on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, correctional staff, during regular tours found an inmate in a cell with a bed sheet tied around his neck. The other end of the sheet was secured to a vent. Correctional and medical staff immediately initiated emergency and life saving measures. The inmate was transported to Saint Vincent Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 3:30 a.m.

The inmate is identified as Jasapersaud Hariprashad, 37, of Bridgeport. He was being held, pending trial, on a $1-million bond with a controlling charge of Attempted Murder. He had most recently entered the system on August 11, 2010. He was the only inmate in the cell at the time.

The exact manner and cause of death will be determined by the State Medical Examiner’s Office. The Department of Correction Security Division and the Connecticut State Police are investigating the death.
