A Warren County (N.J.) man serving five years for arson was sentenced last Friday to three years in state prison by New Jersey Superior Court for his participation in the sexual assault of an inmate in 2002.
Robert C. Wood, 23, of 15 Prosper Way, Washington, was sentenced by Judge John Pursel for conspiracy and criminal restraint. The sentence will be concurrent to the five-year term Wood has been serving since June 2002 for arson.
According to court records, on Aug. 17, 2002, Wood conspired with inmates Michael Harrington, 33, of 194 W. Washington Ave., Washington; Michael Lombardo, 35, formerly of Phillipsburg; and Brian Ballard, 30, of 82 Hudson St., Phillipsburg, to attack an inmate at the Warren County Jail.
The inmates removed the victim from the jail's day room and forced him into a jail cell where Wood held the victim's legs while Ballard sexually assaulted the victim with a plastic bottle.
Ballard pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years, without parole for 81/2 years, on Feb. 28, 2003, for aggravated sexual assault, criminal restraint, conspiracy and attempt to cause bodily harm.
Harrington pleaded guilty to conspiracy and criminal restraint and is awaiting sentencing. Lombardo was indicted in June on charges of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, criminal restraint, conspiracy, and witness tampering. Wood pleaded guilty in April.
