A man once entrusted to teach Gulf Breezearea children martial arts and self-defense was convicted last Thursday, Oct. 28, on two counts of first-degree murder and home-invasion robbery in the 2009 deaths of Byrd and Melanie Billings in Escambia County. Leonard Patrick Gonzalez Jr., 36, a resident of Sterling Point Drive in the Tiger Point area and the married father of six children, offered no defense during a three-day trial in Pensacola. “The evidence speaks for itself,” Gonzalez told Judge Nick Geeker. “The witnesses the state have called are fine with me.” Gonzalez Jr. could face the death penalty. The jury voted 10-2 last Friday to recommend that Gonzalez Jr. be executed.
