Officer accused of helping inmate escape

A veteran Lebanon County (Pa.) correctional officer was charged last week with helping an inmate escape from a prison vehicle.
South Lebanon Township police charged Bonita F. Kirby, 58, of 122 N. Center St., Cleona, with escape, conspiracy to commit escape, false reports to police, tampering with or fabricating evidence, obstructing administration of law, hindering apprehension and weapons of escape.
Kirby was arraigned before District Justice Christine Heck of South Lebanon Township and released after posting $25,000 bail.
Kirby was charged in connection with the June 29 escape of Tina Marie Proudfoot.
Kirby had worked 14 years as a correctional officer at the Lebanon County prison -- 10 of those years in a full-time capacity.
Michael Gerrity, deputy warden, said Kirby had been placed on indefinite leave without pay pending the outcome of the criminal charges against her.
Yesterday, Proudfoot was also arraigned by Heck on escape and conspiracy charges. Her bail was set at $50,000, and she was returned to county prison.
Both are scheduled to appear at preliminary hearings July 29.
