Rapper Lil Wayne has been released from jail after serving eight months of a one-year sentence. The hip-hop superstar has been locked up in New York's Rikers Island prison following his conviction on weapon possession charges stemming from 2007. Officers at the prison stated the star's release date had been pushed back from Thursday to Friday because of him owing one day of "good time" due to breaking prison rules during his stint behind bars. However, officials decided to free the rapper on Thursday morning as planned, TMZ.com has reported. A New York Department of Corrections representative revealed that unlike other released inmates, Wayne was allowed to be taken away from the facility in a private vehicle because of his high profile.
