Texas Prison Testing New Sirens Friday

The new sirens at the State Correctional Institution in Dallas are up and operational.

The sirens were tested Tuesday and will be tested again at noon and 6 p.m. today and Saturday.

"We're very pleased with the Department of Corrections because they answered the call of the residents of Jackson and Lehman townships," said Jackson Township Supervisor Chairman John J. Wilkes Jr., who added that state Sen. Lisa Baker, R-Lehman Township, should also be thanked for her help.

In April, township residents expressed alarm at the state Department of Corrections' plan to remove 24-hour staffing from five state correctional institutions including SCI-Dallas - and to find out that not all the prison's sirens were operational.

"This is what we fought for. This is what the public outcry was for," Wilkes said.
