| Prisoners Being Paroled To Save Money |

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - As many as 260 inmates in Nebraska prisons could be paroled in the next nine months to alleviate overcrowding and help lower costs by about $3 million a year. The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the first of the paroled inmates could leave prison in the next 20-30 days. More than 300 inmates with one year or less to serve enter state prisons each year, and all of them serve their full sentences. Department of Corrections Director Bob Houston (HOUSE-ton) says he's working on a plan with the parole board to get more nonviolent offenders paroled by their eligibility date. Read More. |
