Inmate escapes on hospital visit

Police July 2 were looking for a Cook County (Ill.) Jail inmate who escaped from a Skokie hospital a day earlier.
Robert Bursley, 37, of the 1800 block of Rogers Avenue in Glenview, broke away from a Cook County correctional officer as he was being walked to a transfer vehicle at Rush North Shore Medical Center, said Bill Cunningham, a Cook County sheriff's police spokesman.
Bursley was taken to the hospital, 9600 Gross Point Rd., for observation after he threatened to kill himself after a hearing in the Skokie Courthouse, Cunningham said. Bursley was being held on a drug charge and is not considered dangerous.
Cunningham said Bursley was not handcuffed and was able to scale a wall into a nearby cemetery as officers gave chase.
The sheriff's Internal Affairs Department is investigating the escape as a violation of procedure because Bursley should have been handcuffed, Cunningham said.
