LASSEN COUNTY, CA - A Lassen County judge has granted a petition seeking to remove convicted killer Loren Herzog from the county on grounds of parole release procedure errors by the state corrections department. In 2001, Herzog was convicted in the murders of three people, including Cyndi Vanderheiden of Clements in San Joaquin County. Vanderheiden disappeared in 1998 and her body was never located. Herzog was sentenced to 78 years in prison but appealed on grounds he was coerced during police interviews. A judge cut Herzog's sentence to 12 years. Herzog was originally set to be paroled this past summer in San Joaquin County or Tehama County after serving just less than 10 years with time off for good behavior. However, opposition from Vanderheiden's parents, case witnesses and San Joaquin County law enforcement prompted corrections officials to reconsider where Herzog would be released. According to the Lassen County Superior Court website, a writ of mandate was granted in response to claims the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation failed to notify the county sheriff or Susanville police chief and district attorney 45 days ahead of the placement as required. Lassen County authorities say they were told of Herzog's placement two days before his release. Read More. |
