| Tight Money Means Looser Parole For Nebraska |

The Nebraska Department of Corrections wants to get more inmates out on parole quicker. It's a plan to save the state millions and free up much needed prison space. Money is tight, prisons are overcrowded, but what about public safety? State corrections officials said this is about safety. They say these are people that are eligible for parole anyway. Now instead of immediately being thrown out into a community there will be a parole process. In the next nine months, 260 inmates will be let out into the community on parole. "We would not be making this effort to bring a greater number of people in the community a bit sooner in their incarceration if wasn't to ensure public safety," said Corrections Director Bob Houston.
