An 18-year-old Franklin County (Pa.) Prison inmate was captured shortly after he allegedly assaulted a probation officer and escaped from a work-release assignment last Wednesday morning, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Police said Jordan Michael Spoonhour of Chambersburg was arraigned before District Justice David Hawbaker following his capture on two counts of aggravated assault and one count each of simple assault, escape, criminal attempt to commit kidnapping, theft by unlawful taking or disposition and conspiracy to commit escape.
Shalena Larae Wedlock, 19, of Chambersburg also was arraigned before Hawbaker on charges of escape and conspiracy to commit escape for her involvement in the incident.
Spoonhour remains jailed in lieu of $250,000 bail. Wedlock was released after posting $15,000 bail, officers said.
Police said Terry Allen Gillan, who is employed by the Franklin County Adult Probation office, took Spoonhour and two other inmates from the prison to Brandts Church Road near Route 416 at 9:45 a.m. last Wednesday to pick up litter along the road.
After they arrived at Brandts Church Road, Spoonhour allegedly punched and kicked Gillan and tried to shove him back into the van, police said.
Gillan was able to get out of the van, at which time Spoonhour drove off, according to the report.
Police said Spoonhour drove to Camp Joy-El near Williamson, where he parked the van and fled into the woods. Police did not indicate what happened to the other inmates on the work release detail.
Police allege Spoonhour then called Wedlock on a cell phone he stole from the van.
Police said Wedlock picked up Spoonhour near the spot he abandoned the van and hid him in her vehicle's trunk. Wedlock was stopped by Chambersburg police, who found Spoonhour hiding in the trunk, according to the report.
Gillan was treated in Chambersburg Hospital for facial injuries and a cut on his right arm, police said.
Franklin County Prison Warden John Wetzel said last Wednesday there had been no problems with Spoonhour prior to his escape.
