Rezoning Begining For Former Prison Property

Members of the Laconia Planning Board voted last night to initiate the process of rezoning the former State Prison property.

At the end of the first public hearing Tuesday evening, there was a cheer from the audience after Planning Board members agreed to begin looking at rezoning the property from the current Residential Single Family (RS) to Rural Residential 1 (RR1).

Before its next meeting in December, the board plans on drafting language for the change of zoning and a second public hearing will be held as required. If the rezoning were to be ultimately approved, a recommendation by the Planning Board would be submitted to the city council, which would then have the final say on the matter.

For the past several months, the city has been looking at ways to give take control over the development of the property on the chance that the state sells it for private use. The 200-plus acre property located on North Main Street was previously home to the former State School and more recently used as a prison by the state Department of Corrections between 1991 and 2009.
