| Beating Death Suspect Has History With DOC |

A Clarke County grand jury has indicted a violent ex-con on charges he beat another man to death last month with a ceramic toilet tank top. William Thomas Valentine Jr., 40, killed Alfred Lorenzo "Shorty" Harris early the morning of Oct. 10 inside Harris' home at Garden Apartments off North Street, Athens-Clarke police said. Valentine then kidnapped a woman who witnessed the murder and took her to Madison County where the woman said he raped her, according to police. Grand jurors Tuesday returned an indictment charging Valentine with malice murder, two counts of felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, kidnapping with bodily injury and aggravated sodomy.
