Citing security concerns following a riot at an Oklahoma facility, Arizona is curtailing its transfer of inmates to private, out-of-state prisons. A first group of 30 prisoners was returned to Arizona and arrived last Thursday at the Arizona State Prison Complex. last Another 300 inmates will be moved back to Arizona by August, prison officials said Friday. The Arizona Department of Corrections is bringing home low-custody-level inmates who were not involved in the May 14 disturbance at the Diamondback Correctional Facility in Watonga, Okla. More than 400 inmates reportedly fought with baseball bats, fire extinguishers and boards. Two inmates were critically injured. About 1,200 Arizona prisoners were shipped to Oklahoma earlier this year to help ease crowding in Arizona's prisons. During a special session last year, the state Legislature and Gov. Janet Napolitano agreed to send about 2,000 prisoners to private, out-of-state prisons. A private prison with space for 1,400 inmates in Kingman is scheduled to open in August, and the state is going to open up 1,000 new beds by the end of the year. Another 1,000 private beds could open sometime next year. |
