AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. -- Two attempted murders inside the Airway Heights Correction Center are symptoms of ongoing budget reductions within the Washington Department of Corrections. Michael West, the inmate suspected of the attack against two fellow inmates, which included gouging another prisoner's eye out, was allowed to have cell-mates as part of cost-cutting policies. As layoffs reduce the number of corrections officers available to supervise these inmates our prisons will likely become more dangerous. The problem is, even if you don't care about the safety of the convicts inside corrections centers, violence behind bars leads to more violence on our streets when these offenders get out.
