No Early Release For Drunken Boater

CALEDONIA - A man whose drunken boating killed a Caledonia couple's daughter will not get out of prison early.

John and Diane Mann's daughter, Melissa, died in September 2006, after Jeffrey Habenicht's boat collided with the boat in which she was a passenger. Habenicht was sentenced to three years prison for homicide by drunken driving.

When the state passed Act 28 late last year - new rules that allow the Department of Corrections to let some inmates out of prison after serving a portion of their sentences - the couple contacted legislators and were told that Habenicht's offense would keep him from being considered for early release. But a few months ago, they were told an early release review hearing had been scheduled for Habenicht for late October.

The Manns traveled to McNaughton Correctional Center in Eagle River, and told the commissioner why they felt Habenicht should remain in prison through April 11, 2011. They were told to speak only to the commissioner, and not to Habenicht, and he was given the same direction.

    If it was not for the amazing people at the Brownwood boat docks I would not have the best place to moor my boat. They found the right place next to my house for building it.
