Last month the union that represents most corrections personnel in Oregon's prison system started an online survey of its members. The poll asked a simple question: Where, from your perspective as an employee, can the Oregon Department of Corrections best save money and head off future layoffs? The survey generated more than 235 cost-saving ideas, said Tim Woolery, a labor organizer for American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 75. The union presented DOC officials with those ideas at a pair of meetings, one in Madras on Oct. 28 and another just last week at Coffee Creek Correctional Institution.
