| Parolee Hid Out In Hotel Before Killing |

A high-risk parolee lived in anonymity in a North Beach hotel for two months before he allegedly killed a San Francisco publicist in her nearby apartment. Gary Scott Holland, 43, allegedly posed as a utility worker checking for a gas leak at the apartment building at 900 Chestnut St. on the evening of Oct. 29. Once inside the building, police say he knocked on the door of Kate Horan, 46, who made the simple yet fatal mistake of opening her door to the stranger. As the accused killer faces charges that make him eligible for the death penalty, questions remain as to whether Holland was being properly supervised following his release from prison. He left prison in April after serving time for the attempted murder of a Fresno woman in 1999.
