| No More Prison Boot Camp For Crafty Reoffender |

RACINE - A man who planned a Racine County burglary spree while in a prison boot camp program will not be allowed to participate in the program again. Derek Karny, 23, of Greendale, was sentenced Monday to three years prison and four years extended supervision for the burglaries he committed while he was on probation and electronic monitoring for an earlier Milwaukee County burglary conviction. Karny had gotten out of prison ahead of schedule, after completing the Department of Corrections boot camp program. The program put him on track for early release after intensive treatment and programming. While in the program, he and another inmate began planning the burglaries. "He had the opportunity to better himself in the (boot camp program), and he took that particular opportunity to hook up with another defendant and figure out how they could commit burglaries and fence stolen items," Assistant District Attorney Randall Schneider said.
